Whence Cometh a Word

The origin of the word chocolate came with its discovery by Spanish explorers and traders. The Mexican Aztecs had a strong and bitter drink made from cocoa beans which was called Choco-atl, for ‘bitter water’.The Spaniards’ pronunciation was Chocolato. From there, when the drink was brought to Europe, prized by royals, guarded by Jesuit priests and sweetened with sugar, we got our modern name chocolate.
